For those who want to go a little deeper…
Dear Friend,
This song and sequence assembled during rehearsals and the leadup to concert day is a compelling and complicated mantra that speaks of revolution and a sense of permanence (or impermance depending…).
TFTWTR stopped me.
It is superbly written, is it nagging, is it jarring, and Andy Rush’s arrangement builds it out so uniquely and beautifully.
Taking a song to the woodshed can involve a tremendous amount of hard work, patience and time.
I chose to arrange this sequence in the film as a ‘woodshed’ segment to show the depth and breadth of starts and stops that it can take to get 100+ people moving in a coordinated and correct flow.
In love, I present you a powerful song, an edgey arrangement, and several settings filled with beautiful, complicated people who work hard to put their insufficiencies aside and JUST SING.
I needed to pull this sequence from the film and create a standalone video of just this song because I feel it deserves it.
It’s so very rich, when you see it up close and personal.
The full sequence not shown in the film. My fave.
The scene of extra rehearsal in Andy’s basement just as the song builds higher gets me every time. You will hear Andy say “and Tim, on cuatro” referring to an instrument specially chosen from Joe’s Music Mill and used by musician and songwriter Timothy Aylesworth; Tim ends the istrumental sequence in black and white during band practice with his regular guitar.
Only Love,
Tim
