Have you ever found yourself making an observation about life, only to then utter the words…
“It couldn’t happen to a better person.”
This captures the musical journey of Ryland Murray. It began at a young age, at the behest and influence of his music-loving, concert-going father, Brian, who introduced Ryland to a variety of historically significant and culturally-defining musical acts.
It was what struck me when filming the Stoney Steps Art Fest in Newburgh Ontario in June of 2023. While Ryland sang a variety of songs that day, one song in particular jumped out at me as symbolic of the intersection of his boyish demeanor with his deep appreciation for great music coupled with his ability to take an old classic and make it his own.
In the clip below, Ryland is singing Have You Ever Seen the Rain by Creedence Clearwater Revival. The raw emotion in his voice is captivating. In some ways, you don’t expect the sound to match the man.
But this speaks to Ryland’s broader abilities, which take on additional depth and hue when you hear his original music. Ryland writes about meaningful topics, which is refreshing, and much-needed in a world that is saturated with pop-laden arrangements that lure while offering nothing substantial but a cotton candy headache. Ryland creates music that has the ability to nurture.

In the fall of 2023, Ryland joined Harmony Lounge and Music Club in Napanee Ontario. Within a few short sessions, Ryland was grouped with Brock Pettifer on drums, Joe Hauser on guitar, and Isaac Harvey on bass. The foursome have now formed the band Third Time’s A Charm.
In December of 2023, Ryland also began recording an original track in studio called Self-Sabotage.
And now, through a series of timely connections and relationships, Third Time’s A Charm will perform an opening set for The Wilderness, a local band that is set to begin touring. The show will take place on March 1st, 2024 at Doghouse Studios in Napanee.
The best thing about Ryland Murray is that he’s developing into a fine young man. Humble. Grateful. Down-to-earth. Everything else is just gravy.
And it couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.
